Failure… To Be Transcended
When you make something so awesome, and it fails at the very end…. When people tell you what they want and its not what you do, even being honest, the illusion is real. Never give up, for failure and imperfection is someones else’s treasure and perfection. Art is in the perception of the first person vision of consciousness. No one perceives the world the same, a very metaphysical experience. Creating is a act of putting creative energy into motion to have a cause and effect in the material world, the spark of the light bulb and form takes shape. Sometimes the direction of ones vision is altered due to material influences you were not expecting. Though going with the flow and making the best out of it, the end of the day you succeeded even in failure cause you learned how to manipulate the failure so it doesn’t repeat again. Life is a set of experiences and challenges to help steer you in a soul growth learning. When one is too particular, stubborn, unable to see the other vision, should the artist buckle or persevere through those states which can shift the energy to a polarized state of neutrality. The course in making art, the financial strain, the set backs; all apart of the creative process to which time spent will one day be compensated. As the World of perception in Art changes, each year the themes of acceptance in main stream shifts, or the illogical verbiage, robotic language to describe a piece hanging on the wall will shift. The Critic will have to revise the use of lingo which out dates and punishes the perspective and meaning to a piece; or stop taking bribes to influence the buyer with spell casting words of illusion.
Even with all the imperfections, if you hold, or view a piece and energetically get something from it, hold it dear to ones heart space. Getting lost in a painting for me at least, is the most valuable time spent. This meditative state enhances the ability to get lost in ones own self, connecting to the hues, tone, vibrations, and composition of a work. As the world shifts, the meaning of a creation should shift, with more of a vibratory state of frequency the pieces emit. I take pride in something someone doesn’t like of mine, cause I know their not the one for it. We all search for meaning in things when we should feel; intuition is key. I was once told in my senior year of college during a exhibition at the School of Visual Arts by a critic from the Village Voice Jerry Saltz “Your work is TOO ARISTOTELIAN” Well if he were to understand the nature of reality and metaphysics possibly would have understood my sculptures better. Though that wasn’t all he said, but what stood out, but a pleasant man whom I was excited to meet. Working with professors who showed around the world with magazine covers like Marilyn Minter, the experience I bought was worth it. The hardest part for my professors was to literally figure out the metaphysics behind my train of thinking and the sometimes failed execution of my work in sculpture, as I wanted to challenge myself in that area and not so much painting cause I excelled there.
The Artist should always have avenues of uncomfortable exploration of something outside their talented paradigms. I did this in college. exploring other types of materials, methods, and jumping off the metaphorical cliff to see where things will go. Not all executions of work were successful, many were failures but learning experiences non-the-less and we should give some grace to those who are willing to venture in the unknown practices once lost to a critics words. Never allow to have negative words change you, only take the constructive criticism if will better your work. The harsh reality is sometimes taking the negative and transmuting it to light a fire under your ass will motivate you to excel and become what you couldn’t fathom is possible. Keep pushing forward for all my failures and imperfect work will find a happy place for me to enjoy if not someone else. 10/14/2023
